After a record year of disasters, the Little Egypt Red Cross faces a tremendous budget crunch and still has more than a month left in the fiscal year.

"We've had nine major disasters, that's a record for our 14 county region in Southern Illinois," says L-E-R-C Director Sandra Webster. "We have to respond, we can't just say 'Sorry we can't help you, we have to fundraise and then come help you', we have to go there where we're needed right away."

The latest round of severe weather, including a devastating tornado in extreme Southern Illinois, sent this Red Cross to the red. For this particular tornado disaster, the Red Cross raised $1700 so far, but the food, clothing, and shelter for the victims cost more than $170-thousand dollars.

The organization starts out the year with 43-thousand...but that money only lasts so long. Plus, most people don't realize the Red Cross is federally mandated, and not federally funded.
