CAPE GIRRADEAU, MO (KFVS) - Chaplain Terry Wildman's Shelter of Hope ministry currently runs a thrift store on Broadway where they also serve meals, but the construction on their new homeless shelter is currently put on hold.
One of the shelter's coordinators, Bob Nelson, says the shelter was supposed to open several months ago but the money is running out. Nelson says right now in the bank they have about $15,000, but they need an additional $35,000 to finish.
"We have to go by motel code restrictions," said Nelson. "It still needs a lot of work and we need a lot of people to come in and help."
Nelson says a pricey sprinkler system was not originally in the plans and that has helped push their budget even higher. Nelson says folks call everyday looking for shelter and he hopes that the community will continue to help and make this shelter a reality.
