JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded Jefferson County Public Water Supply District #13 more than $1.5 million in wastewater grants for sewer improvements.

The district will use the grants to construct a force main and septic tank effluent pump collection system that will drain to a new re-circulating sand filter treatment facility for the Lake Tishomingo community.

Officials say the facility will consist of a re-circulation tank, four sand filters, ultraviolet disinfection and all necessary related equipment.

"Inadequate treatment of wastewater can have significant negative effects on our lakes, rivers and streams," said Department Director Mark N. Templeton.

The Department of Natural Resources sold $50 million in bonds in November 2007 allowing the department to provide the district with the grant funds to support the Clean Water Initiative for water and wastewater improvements.
