Standoff in Joppa ends, 1 man dead after shootout

JOPPA, IL (KFVS) - An autopsy revealed the suspect in a standoff with police Sunday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head Sunday.

Illinois State Police tactical officers quickly sealed off the area around the home of 58-year-old Monty Kingsly on Rudy Street. The incident ended around 9 p.m. Sunday. When authorities finally got into the home, Kingsly was dead.

He had been wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the police, according to Illinois State Police.

Kingsly apparently refused to surrender or come out of his home and reportedly even shot at authorities. Why police wanted Kingsly is still unknown at this time.

Some people watching the standoff say they can't believe Kingsly is involved.

"I used to scuba dive with him down at Mermet Springs," said friend Cody Dresser. "He was a good guy. I would always talk to him. And I come out here to see what is going on. I hate for this to happen."

The investigation continues.
