Motorcyclist killed in I-57 crash July 17, 2010 at 11:14 PM CDT - Updated June 21 at 3:37 PM By Arnold Wyrick - bio | email WILLIAMSON COUNTY,IL - (KFVS) -A Saturday morning crash on Interstate 57 kills a DuQuoin man. Illinois State Police say the fatal crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday, at mile marker 45 as a group of motorcycle riders were traveling northbound in the interstate. "We had an officer down here taking a report on a property damage accident," said Master Sergeant Bruce Travelstead. "What we believe right now is possibly the front bikes slowed for the officer up here, and that caused a reaction in the back when they slowed down." Master Sergeant Travelstead says the drivers in the rear of the pack weren't paying attention. "I think some were looking elsewhere, and the next thing you know it started causing motorcycles to start colliding with each other." The interstate was shut down for more than two hours as crews cleared the damaged motorcycles. Two drivers were injured in the crash, and the Williamson County Coroner reports that 48-year old Dudley Lee Van Zandt of Du Quoin was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Copyright 2010 KFVS. All rights reserved.
