FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Illinois State Police crash reconstructionists are still working to piece together what caused a fire crash on Interstate 57 Thursday afternoon.

Troopers have not issued any citations, but say charges are pending in the wreck that killed two.

According to the Illinois State Police, at least seven vehicles were involved in the crash including four large trucks.

The driver of an asphalt truck owned by Renee Trucking Company out of Marion, Illinois was killed in the crash.  He is 54-year-old Randy Reynolds of Herrin, Illinois.

The driver of the box truck involved in the wreck also died.  According to Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler, he is 51-year-old Carl James Jones, JR.of Florissant, Missouri who is employed by Waller Trucking Company of Kansas City.

ISP reports the first vehicle, an SUV, was stopped on the interstate because of construction ahead.  Behind the SUV, two pickups and a flatbed semi truck all came to a stop.

But then the driver of a box truck, Carl James Jones, JR., slammed into the back of the flatbed truck causing a chain reaction crash initially involving five vehicles.

But it wasn't over, ISP says the driver of an asphalt dump truck, Randy Reynolds, then slammed into the crashed box truck followed by another asphalt truck also hitting the group.

Police say the first asphalt truck then caught fire which in turn caught both the other asphalt truck and box truck on fire.

Only two other people received minor injuries in the crash. They were the driver of the third pickup truck and a passenger of the same truck. The driver was treated at the scene and his passenger refused treatment.

At one point all the lanes of Interstate 57 from Benton to Johnston City were closed but the southbound lanes reopened around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The crash happened near milepost 65.5 at 2:02 p.m. in a construction zone in the northbound lanes.  That's just north of West Frankfort.

Traffic was detoured to Route 37 while crews cleared the scene.
