Free lunches for kids in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - When kids are in school they get at least one nutritious meal, but not always during the summer months.

East Missouri Action Agency and Cape Area Family Resource Center are providing meals in the summer for these kids.

Resource center board member Kevin Sexton says at all of their sites they are feeding 70 to 80 kids per day. He hopes to see that number go up because kids under 19 can now eat at the Red Star Baptist Activity Center for free.

Sexton also says it is an opportunity for the kids to have access to some healthy meals. But, it is difficult to try and find meals that kids enjoy and are healthy.

Director Jennifer Nagel says that coming up with menus are a challenge because nutrition is the first priority. She also says processed foods are kept away from the kitchen and the majority of the meals are made from scratch.

A big plus is that the new location offers free transportation. Cape County transit provided the  29 passenger van at cost and will run a loop starting at 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Nagel adds they haven't had very many people participate due to the word not getting out. She hopes that changes and does not want to see the lid close on this program.
