MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (AP) - Sentencing is on hold for a southern Illinois man convicted of driving under the influence when he was involved in a 2006 wreck that killed another man.
Nineteen-year-old Steven Hanner's sentencing was to have been Thursday in Jefferson County. But a judge honored a defense request that Hanner undergo a mental fitness evaluation.
A jury convicted Hanner in march of aggravated driving under the influence and marijuana possession.
Authorities say Hanner was 16 when his vehicle entered the path of a motorcycle driven by Ronald Hale of Waltonville in June 2006. Hale later died.
Court documents allege that six different drugs were in Hanner's system at the time of the accident, including marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine.
