Former postal employee given probation after stealing packages

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - A former postal service employee was given three years probation after stealing packages from people on her route.

On Thursday, Heather A. Stowers, also known as Heather A. Winder, 34, of Tamaroa, IL was sentenced to three years probation for stealing and wrongfully removing with the intent to convert to her own use, the contents of mail packages which came into her possession for the purpose of being delivered by her as an employee of the United States Postal Service.

According to information provided in open court, Stowers began her job as a letter carrier for the Postal Service on April 12, 2008, and was in charge of delivering mail to Postal Service customers residing in DuQuoin and Tamaroa, IL.

Postal Service Inspectors began their investigation after receiving complaints from customers on her route that they had not received packages which had been mailed to them between April and August of 2009.

In an interview with inspectors, Stowers admitted that she had removed various items from the mail and had not delivered the packages.

Stowers was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $401.80, a fine of $100 and $100 in special assessments in addition to her probation.
