LOUISVILLE, KY (KFVS) - The Coast Guard has closed a portion of the Ohio River Tuesday to all commercial traffic.
The captain of the port for Sector Ohio Valley says the river is closed from mile marker 847.5 to 849, near Uniontown, Ky., due to high currents from the Wabash River.
The closure is based on input from the Army Corps of Engineers, as well as key maritime industry stakeholders, in order to prevent vessels from running a ground.
The Coast Guard is working with the Corps and towing reps to survey the area, mark the channel, and develop plans to re-open the waterway to commercial traffic when deemed safe.
