Suspect charged with murder in Cape shooting death

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad announced Thursday evening that Thomas D. Evans, Jr., of Bellwood, Illinois, has been arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder in connection with the weekend shooting death of Matthew "Woody" Ervin.

Early Saturday morning, police found the body of Ervin lying in the middle of Fountain Street, near the post office.

According to court documents, Ervin's car was parked nearby. While searching for clues inside the car, police found a key to an apartment. The traced that key to an apartment at 418 Themis Street.

Evans was living at that location. After confronting Evans, officers took him to the police station for questioning. They also collected evidence at the apartment including a pair of blood stained tennis shoes, socks and a shirt.

During questioning, police say Evans admitted to shooting Ervin. Evans is in jail this morning. Bond has been set at $2 million dollars.

Additional charges and arrests are expected to be announced later.
