CAIRO, IL (KFVS) - Police are interviewing witnesses as they investigate a deadly shooting outside a club in Cairo early Thursday morning.
Cairo Police Chief Timothy Brown says 19-year-old Jeserick Pilgrim of Mounds, died in the shooting.
A second person, 30-year-old Tyron Watson of Cairo, was also shot. Watson was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital with a gunshot wound to his left calf. He's was in stable condition and expected to be released from the hospital Thursday night.
Cairo Police Chief Timothy Brown says his department received the call at 2:38 a.m. When officers arrived, Brown says a large group of people were in the street saying several rounds of gunshots were fired.
"It was chaos," Chief Brown said. "It was 75 to 100 people yelling, screaming who was shot, how many people was and we was just going, trying to find the victims, take care of the victims first."
Mary J's owner Percy Jones Jr. says he just shut down the club when he saw someone fire a gun outside.
"I got outside, I just saw two cars turning the corner and a guy across the street was shooting at the cars," said Jones Jr. "By that time police cars was coming up."
Police say they believe the victims knew each other and something outside the club led to the shooting.
Investigators taped off the area around Mary J's Club at 4th and Commercial streets.
A white car and maroon SUV were hit by several gunshots that shattered glass. Bullet holes were seen inside the SUV.
Illinois State Police crime scene investigators spent about 12 hours marking the scene, taking pictures, and reconstructing shots.
Investigators were searching for a suspect vehicle but they have not said what type of vehicle it is or how many people they are looking for.
The Alexander County Sheriff's Department is helping Cairo Police in their search for that vehicle.
An autopsy was performed on the victim Thursday afternoon in Farmington.
