KUTTAWA, KY (KFVS) - A fire in a nursing home in Kuttawa early Wednesday morning forced the evacuation of residents to the Lyon County Elementary School.
According to Kuttawa Fire Chief Bill Compton, the call came in at 1:48 a.m. The fire started in the mechanical room at the Christian Care Center. Compton says the fire was contained quickly, but there was a great deal of smoke, which made it unsafe for residents--some of whom suffer from respiratory illnesses.
As a result, 61 residents of the nursing home were taken to Lyon County Elementary School until Kentucky state authorities declared the building safe to inhabit.
Residents were transported back to the facility by ambulance, Lyon County buses, church buses and private cars about 1 p.m. Many of them are wheelchair and bed bound. By 3 p.m. all residents were back 8in the facility.
One daughter of a resident in the nursing home says she is happy with how it was taken care of.
"I felt good about leaving her here before, but I do feel even better knowing they'll take care of her. It means a lot," said Faye Phelps.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
