SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The Sikeston Department of Public Safety will focus on reducing deaths on July 4th holiday weekend to prevent serious injuries caused by impaired drivers.
The Missouri Department of Transportation and the Sikeston DPS will call the campaign "You Drink & Drive. You Lose". Through this traffic enforcement campaign, efforts will be increased by Sikeston DPS from July 2 through July 5, 2010, for the July 4th holiday weekend.
Sikeston DPS cites these consequences if you are caught driving while intoxicated:
- For the first conviction (or first conviction in over five years), your license will be suspended for 30 days, followed by a 60-day suspension if a hardship license is not obtained.
- A second conviction will result in a $1,000 fine, a year-long revocation of the convicted driver's license and up to a year in jail. The second conviction will also require the driver to install an ignition interlock system on their vehicle preventing their vehicle from starting when the driver has alcohol on their breath.
- Third and subsequent DWI convictions can be penalized with up to a $5,000 fine, a 10 year license denial, and/or up to seven years in jail.
- If an intoxicated driver causes a fatal crash, the driver could be charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, a felony resulting in up to seven years of jail time, a $5,000 fine or both.
City officials are also are asking citizens to be careful and obey all laws concerning fireworks.
Sikeston has ordinances within city limits against setting off fireworks in the city limits. Those who disregard the ordinance will be ticketed with their fireworks confiscated and destroyed.
