CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – Police need your help tracking down clues and suspects in connection with a homicide investigation in Cape Girardeau. They now say they believe drugs may have been involved in the incident that lead up to the apparent shooting death of 44 year old Matthew Ervin. Ervin was found near North Fountain and Park, Saturday morning around 1:45 a.m.

"We don't know everything that happened, but it could have possibly been drug related," said Sgt. Jason Selzer. "The Major Case Squad has been working non-stop and they will continue to do that until we get this solved or exhaust all leads."

Sgt. Selzer says they need help with information about what Ervin was doing before he was shot. Right now they aren't releasing where the bullet struck Ervin.

"This doesn't look to be random," said Sgt. Selzer. "We had several people in to question and leads to follow up on but so far it hasn't been enough to arrest anyone."

According to Missouri Court Records, Ervin had been in and out of trouble for years.

"There could have been more than one person involved," said Sgt. Selzer.

Ervin lived on North Spanish, not far from the crime scene. His car was found near the area where he was shot. Police want to know if you saw Ervin or talked with him in the hours before his death. He was likely driving the tan Buick Park Avenue found at the scene. If you have any information, contact police.
