Man says he was held hostage by neighbor wearing pillow case

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – It's a disturbing story of a man accused of stealing from his elderly neighbor for drug money. But that's only part of the ordeal the suspect allegedly put him through.

According to prosecutors Steven McMeans held 83 year old Mel Roach captive in his own apartment.

There, court documents say McMeans beat him up, stole his money, threatened to kill him, cut his phone lines and more.

The day after the ordeal, Mr. Roach says he's hurting physically and financially. He says McMeans took all the money he had, $300.

"He says I got a gun in my pocket and I'm going to shoot you in the back of the head," said Roach. "I was watching TV when I heard a noise."

Roach says someone was knocking on the door and he looked outside to find a man with a pillow case over his head.

Roach says the man forced his way inside by threatening him with a screw driver.

"He came in and he said he wanted my money. He chocked me and hit me," said Roach. "Rather than die, I gave him my money."

Roach says every once in a while, McMeans would peek out from under the pillow case, and he recognized him as his neighbor.

According to Roach, McMeans stayed in the apartment for at least an hour.  Roach says he left, and returned at one point, pretending to be a police officer.

"He says I caught the guy, I want to give you your money back," said Roach.

Alinea McMeans told police her husband talked about robbing Roach.

When asked she told Heartland news her husband wanted the money because he has a drug problem.

She also told us McMeans planned to go into rehab Friday.

"If I could've prevented this I would have," said Alinea McMeans.

Steven McMeans faces several felony counts including robbery, burglary, and arm criminal action. He's behind bars in $25,000 bond.
