CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – Employees react after a Cape Girardeau business decides to close after more than 70 years.
General Sign Company shut down on Friday. According to supervisors, the economy has just brought too much pressure, and the company couldn't recover. Thirty one employees lost their jobs.
"It's bittersweet," said Jim Dale.
Dale worked for General Sign Company for 37 years.
"It's like a family," said Dale.
Other employees agree with Dale saying General Sign was a close knit group.
"It's hard to lose a business that's been here since 1939," said one employee who did not want to be named. "A lot of history and memories."
While former workers will receive compensation pay, Dale says he is thankful his wife has a good job at a local hospital.
"We're leaning on each other now," said Lisa Dale. "We'll be fine."
Meanwhile, Dale says he's ready to move forward and look for another job.
"I'm going to contact a few people," said Dale. "On Wednesday, I'm scheduled to go in and pick up my personal things."
