DONIPHAN, MO (KFVS) - The Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce says every company in Poplar Bluff's Industrial Park is looking for new employees.
But companies say they can't find enough people to fill the positions and they're not sure why.
"There should be people out there who you can employ," said Halter.
Halter says while Butler County's unemployment rate of 7.4 percent is below the national and state average, he doesn't know why employers offering manufacturing jobs can't fill open positions.
"You hear a lot of hype in the news about manufacturing jobs being cut, and that may have something to do with it. But what we're trying to do is let people know that we do have jobs in Butler County and Poplar Bluff to offer people and we just need people to work for them," he said.
Faye McKelroy of Gates Corporation came to a job fair Wednesday in Doniphan to try to recruit up to 20 new workers, and said she didn't collect enough applications to fill the jobs.
"I do think that the unemployment benefits are a little bit of a problem for employers," McKelroy said.
Tammie Morgan of Nordyne was also left guessing as to why her company couldn't fill 30 open positions, especially with so many people looking for work.
"I really don't know what the root cause could be. It could be lack of skills, maybe the qualifications that we're looking for, but sometimes it's just that we don't have people applying like we used to," she said.
While having open positions is a problem, Halter says it's better than not having any positions at all.
