MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Mt. Vernon City Council unanimously passed the city budget on Monday making cuts to the city's police and fire departments.

According to City Manager Ron Neibert, Mt. Vernon will close Fire Station #2 and not fill two firefighter and two police officer positions. Those staffing cuts are accomplished through attrition, so there will be no layoffs. Cuts to the departments will save the city $350,000.

Fire station two will close on May first.

According to Mayor Mary Jane Chesley, the fire department has already re-drawn its boundary lines to ensure response time does not increase drastically due to these cuts.

The city also plans to make major infrastructure improvements to roads, sewers and the city's water system.
