CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The city of Cape Girardeau delivered trash cans and recycling bins Monday for its new automated trash system.

The city is expected to deliver about 2,000 on Monday and pass them out in the next two weeks.

The city will help get rid of the old cans also.

"We will start picking up your old cans on the last pickup, your last pickup of the month," Cape Girardeau Solid Waste Director Michael Tripp said. "You have two options with them. One, you can either set them out at the curb. If your trash day is on Monday, you're last Monday we'll take them and throw them away for you. If not you can bring them to our recycling center and we'll recycle them for you."

The Public Works Department says the new trucks will be able to make more stops in less time, saving $21,000 in the first year alone.

Five workers will be moved to other open city positions in the Public Works Department.
