MT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - FBI agents along with local law enforcement bust up a multi-state theft ring in Jefferson County. Authorities arrested 46-year old Abel Rodriguez and 39-year old Cecilio Guillen Wednesday afternoon.
Both appeared before a Jefferson County Judge Thursday. Neither speaks English, so an interrupter translated as Judge Terry Gamber read their charges and rights. Each is charged with theft over $500,000 and theft of semi trailer.
According to the Illinois State Police, these arrests come after a three-day investigation by FBI agents from Evansville, Indiana.
Apparently, agents were conducting surveillance on a group of Cuban's, who were allegedly stealing semi trailers full of pharmaceutical products.
ISP says agents followed Rodriguez and Guillen to the TA Truck stop in Mount Vernon. According to court documents Rodriguez and Guillen allegedly hijacked semi truck full of Enfamil Baby Formula worth more than $500,000.
However, they did not get far. Trooper David Snead says FBI agents along with Illinois State Police officers quickly moved in and arrested the pair.
Both were taken to the Jefferson county jail and each face a bond of half a million dollars. Meanwhile, the investigation continues with federal charges pending.
