NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens says a suspect is in custody in connection with the death of a woman found Wednesday afternoon.

Police arrested the boyfriend of 49-year-old Dorothy Hood who was found dead off the side of a road in New Madrid County Wednesday afternoon.

Jann Wofford, 54, of Howardville faces 1st degree murder and armed criminal action charges.

Investigators say Hood was found with multiple gunshot wounds at close range.  However, autopsy results are not complete.

No weapon has been recovered, but police suspect a handgun was used.

Wofford told police he and Hood had bought crack-cocaine several times, then started arguing in the car when Hood displayed a handgun, according to the probable cause statement.  Wofford told police the gun went off a couple times as they struggled over the gun and went off a couple more times as he gained control of the gun.  Wofford also said he knew the passenger window was shot out, but didn't know Hood had been shot until he saw her slumped over in the passenger's seat.  The probable cause statement says he then admitted to dragging Hood's body to a ditch, and asking his brother and nephew to help clean up his car.

Police arrested Wofford at an apartment complex in New Madrid about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The sheriff said someone driving down County Road 501 Wednesday afternoon noticed blood in the middle of the road and stopped to check it out.

Sheriff Stevens says that person then spotted Hood's body off to the side of the road near a fence.

Investigators believe she had not been there more than a day.

Members of the SEMO Major Case Squad are now investigating the case.  They conducted interviews late into the night Wednesday.

No arraignment for Wofford has been set.  No bond was set.
