Wife And Daughter of Police Officer Die In Fire

(Poplar Bluff, MO)--A mother and daughter are the victims of an early morning house fire in Poplar Bluff.  It happened on County Road 309 about 3am Monday morning.  The Butler County Fire Department responded, but the home was fully engulfed when they arrived, making a rescue impossible.

A Poplar Bluff police officer was the first on the scene of that fire. The call he responded to was at his own home. The victims were his wife and 4-year old daughter.

30-year old Ginger McCane and four year old Kalin McCane tried to get out of the burning home. Family members say they made it to the back of the house, but couldn't escape the flames. Witnesses say Patrolman Steve McCane wanted to go in to try to save his family, but was kept out by a friend.

Butler County Fire Chief Bob Fredwell says a preliminary report indicates an electric wall heater may have caused the fire.
A bank account for donations has been set up at Peoples Community State Bank in Poplar Bluff.
