(KFVS) - Even though the Heartland StormTeam wasn't expecting much of an impact, there was the chance we could see our first accumulating snowfall of the season on Wednesday, and road crews didn't want to take any chances.

Many trucks could be seen out and about Tuesday in Cape Girardeau and surrounding areas, treating main highways and some side roads just in case ice were to become a problem.

"We're ready," said Keith Gentry with the Missouri Department of Transportation.  "We have about 25,000 tons of salt on hand in the district.  We make salt brine routinely when we need it.  So we're ready."

Transportation cabinet crews were also pre-treating roads in western Kentucky Tuesday with salt brine.  Crews will "B" and "C" snow priority routes Tuesday and "A" routes Wednesday morning.

The Heartland StormTeam was predicting a chance of light snow early Wednesday that could eventually change to sleet.  However, the StormTeam predicted highs from 34-40 with very little accumulation before the sleet changes to rain.
