New Marriage "Proposal"

Some Illinois lawmakers want to require couples in their state to undergo four hours of marriage counseling or wait 60 days before tying the knot, because they say it would help reduce the divorce rate and the costs associated with that legal process.

Right now, most Heartland states only enforce a 1-3 day waiting period before couples can get married, but many religions ask the newlyweds-to-be to complete some form of marriage classes or church-based counseling.

While those type of pre-marriage workshops don't guarantee a successful marriage, some clergy members say this type of preparation is usually beneficial. They go on to say four hours of counseling won't be too helpful, but thinking long and hard about any major decision probably won't hurt matters either.
