Shooting At Cairo Bar

(Cairo, IL)--It was a frightening scene in a Cairo bar early Wednesday morning. Police say two masked men walked into the La Petite Bar and demanded cash from the bartender. He refused, then struggled with the robbers as they tried to grab the cash register.

Witnesses say 19-year old Wadelon McCallister opened fire, hitting the bartender in the arm. McCallister and his accomplice, 18-year old Edward Harris then took the cash register and fled the scene.

They apparently didn't have much of a getaway plan though, McCallister was spotted by police only a block from the crime scene.

Cairo Police Chief Jim Wright says,  "The officer stopped him. There was a confrontation." A ski mask fell from the suspect's waist. He broke free from the officer and ran, but they located him and the other suspect hiding in a car.

Both suspects are charged with armed robbery.

The bartender who was shot, 64-year old Floyd Cavanaugh, was treated and released from a Cape Girardeau hospital.
