Smart Mop: Does it Work?

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -  At first glance, the Smart Mop looks like the Sham Wow on a stick! It's the same fabric, and my tester, Jeanette Patterson is ready to help me wring out some results.

First, Jeanette pours a soda onto her tile floor, just like the commercial.

"Oh yeah, look at that," she remarks.

It's more impressive when we compare it to the standard Swiffer mop. The Swiffer makes an even bigger mess, but there aren't any drips with the Smart Mop.  Then we wring out the Smart Mop into a glass, just like the commercial.  We need a bigger glass, but you get the idea this is working so far.

"I think it's very good about picking up liquid," says Jeanette.

Can it pick up messes and spills? We pour brown sugar, ketchup and mustard into a big pile onto the tile floor, pretty much just like the commercial.

"I'm gonna go right in the middle," says Jeanette as she starts to use the Smart Mop to clean it up.

The mop really does pick it up! Jeanette doesn't even have to wring it out! When we dipped the mop into the bucket, the smart mop comes out clean, ready to go again.

"It's doing a pretty good job."

Finally, we put in some clean mop solution and water. I use the Smart Mop to clean up some water I purposely spilled onto the floor. Once again, it has good absorbency. Believe it or not, I now have a little bit more trust to hold it over my head, just like the commerical.  Supposedly, it won't even drip on you---and it didn't!

It's looking like a clean sweep for the Smart Mop, but before that happens you should know it's a bit tricky trying to take the mop head off to wash it. Plus, I searched online and at stores. Replacement heads don't look all that easy to come by. So, the smart mop could cost you more money in the end.

"There's sometimes I do think it would come in handy, but I think it's good for messes," says Jeanette.

I'd probably still want something else to disinfect my floors, but this might be good to clean up spills with.

"High b or A- minus," recommends Jeanette.

Based on some of the unknowns like replacement costs and durability, the $15 Smart Mop wipes up a good B+ on this Does it Work test. I bought it at Target.

NOTE: I took the Smart Mop home to see how it holds up in the wash. It left little bits of orange fabric fuzz all over my washer. It also doesn't appear to be all that durable. Once again, it's tricky and tiresome to pull the mop head off and on to wash. For me personally, I'll stick with my regular mop, although this one does live up to most of its promises.
