After medical workers find white, unknown particles, floating in bags of donated blood, the Tennessee Valley Region of the American Red Cross immediately began an investigation into the mysterious contaminant.

Officials with the ARC say they had to get rid of nearly 70% of their current supply, because they still don't know what's causing the white stuff to appear. Now, there's an even bigger demand for donors, to help replenish the recently depleted blood supply.

Several counties in the Heartland, including some in Missouri, Kentucky, and Illinois send collected units of blood to the Tennessee Valley Region Blood Center, and anything they collect will help the rebuilding process.

Over the past week, there have been several previously scheduled blood drives in Southern Illinois, including one on Thursday in Anna, where around 50 pints were collected.
