Support Grows For Iron County Mother Accused Of Killing Her Own Son

A petition drive is growing in the wake of a 66 year old mother's arrest in the shooting death of her son.  In the meantime, Dixie Shunk's family wins a small victory in its efforts to get her out of jail, five days after prosecutors charged her with the murder of her own son.
Police arrested Dixie Shunk January Ninth in the shooting death of Joe Shunk, Junior. An Iron County judge reduced bond for Shunk on Tuesday to $150,000.00.  Her family needs to raise ten percent of that now to get her released.
"She's a hero," says family friend Jane Lawson, who gathered with a small group of supporters outside the Iron County Courthouse Tuesday morning. "This is a close-knit community. Everybody knew how abusive he (Joe Junior) was."
The Shunk family claims Dixie Shunk acted in self-defense when she shot her 41 year old son. Prosecutors charged her with murder and armed criminal action.  Mrs. Shunk appeared briefly in court Tuesday morning and will be back before a judge March 27th.
In the meantime, her family says the judge will allow her to be transferred to a local hospital in the next few days for a physical and mental evaluation.
