KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - An effort to recall Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser has started.
5 registered voters filed an affidavit Monday morning with the Kansas City Clerk's office to begin the recall effort.
1 of the petitioners, Anne McGregor, told The Star that the mayor has "ceased to be effective."
Supporters must gather 17,000 signatures within 30 days to call for a recall election.
The group says Funkhouser should be recalled because he has violated the city's volunteer ordinance and nepotism rules.
Funkhouser sued the council in November after it enacted an ordinance that keeps his wife, Gloria Squitiro, from volunteering in his office.
Funkhouser has said repeatedly that he believes any recall attempt is doomed to fail.
