Steele police chief arrested on prescription drug charges

By Heartland News

STEELE, MO (KFVS) - FBI agents arrested the Steele police chief on prescription drug charges Tuesday morning.

According to U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway, FBI agents arrested Michael Tomlinson on two counts of possession and two counts of distribution of narcotics.

The complaint alleges that Tomlison possessed Hydrocodone and Xanax pills on March 5 and 9, 2009, and that he unlawfully distributed controlled substances on March 13, 2009.

Hanaway says their office started hearing rumors and complaints of wrongdoing by the chief and that those those rumors rose to the level that they started taking them seriously.

Hanaway says Tomlinson hasn't made his initial appearance in court.  He is being held in the federal courthouse but will go before a judge Tuesday and could post bail.

The Bootheel Drug Task Force, the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department, the Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives assisted in the investigation.

Tomlinson could get five years behind bars if convicted.
