CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Mention the word flood, and people in the Heartland start to get a little nervous. In fact, rising waters already have people on edge in communities up north, and recent rains aren't helping.
But what's the outlook for the Heartland?
Flood warnings are in effect in Cape County, Perry, and Scott Counties.
Richard Knaup is the Emergency Management Director for Cape County. He says a briefing next week from the National Weather Service will offer more insight into what the river holds in the weeks ahead. However, right now, they expect the Mississippi to crest at 36 feet in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.
That is four feet above flood stage.
"We don't expect a lot of hard ships in the county," said Knaup.
He also advises, just because the river is expected to crest above flood stage, that doesn't mean areas will flood.
