Du Quoin schools to cut, possibly layoff due to $1.9 m budget shortfall

DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) - Du Quoin is yet another southern Illinois school district considering cuts that may include layoffs and other cost saving measures in anticipation of massive state budget cuts.

Du Quoin Superintendent Dr. Gary Kelly says the district faces a total budget shortfall of as much as $1.9 million in state aid for FY2011.

District leaders are meeting with faculty and staff in collective bargaining sessions in an effort to work together to whittle down the debt.

Kelly says that task is made even tougher in southern Illinois because of the economics of the region; southern Illinois districts don't have the tax revenue to cushion the blow of budget cuts to the level northern Illinois schools do. But Kelly says he is hopeful Governor Pat Quinn's proposed tax increase for education may offset some of that massive shortfall.

The Du Quoin School Board will meet Thursday, March 18 at 6:30 to vote on budget cuts.
