Cape lays out plans for school improvements

Cape Girardeau, MO (KFVS) -- Thursday night a committee made up of school administrators, teachers, and members of the community laid out their plans for improvements to school buildings throughout the district.

The Cape School District is hoping voters will pass what's called a Debt service levy.  If passed it will raise about 35 million dollars for improvements district wide.

At a meeting Thursday night school officials said the money will help the district bring schools up to code and address safety issues.

District officials were quick to point out that not all of the buildings in the district need work.

Some of the things the district is considering is building a sports complex at the football field at Cape Central High School, building a 900 seat auditorium at the high school as well as making more classroom space.

Voters will have to vote on the levy but officials tell Heartland News this will not affect taxpayers.

The issue is expected to head to the school board for approval soon.

The earliest voters could see the issue on the ballots is April 2010.
