Southeast Missouri to see $137 million from federal spending bill

President Barack Obama says he agreed to sign an "imperfect" spending bill containing pet projects of congressmen because it is needed to keep the government running smoothly.

Of the $410 billion, $137 million in federal funding is on its way to southeast Missouri.

These federal funds are part of the appropriation bill passed Tuesday night.

Missouri Senator Kit Bond explained where some of the money is going.

On the way for a bypass in Poplar Bluff is $1.9 million.  The funds will be used for construction of County Road 302.

Wappapello Lake will get $9.5 million.  The money will pay for flood control, recreation and fish and wildlife projects.

Nearly $400,000 is on the way for harbor projects in New Madrid County.  The money will pay for dredging to insure year round access to terminal sites and maintenance of a slack water harbor used for grain exports.

Just over $600,000 is heading to Ste. Genevieve and Perry counties.  That money will be used for improvements to Highway 61.

Cape Girardeau will receive nearly $300,000 for equipment upgrades at the Career and Technology Center.

Farmington will receive $855,000.  That will allow the town to purchase land for a new runway at the Farmington airport.

Nearly $350,000 will be used for paving and repairs to roads in Stoddard County.

Shannon and Carter counties will get $950,000.  The money will pay for the expansion and maintenance of Highway 60.

Senator Bond also added a note to the spending bill, making the Little River Diversion projet a Corps of Engineers priority.  The project will provide flood protection to Dutchtown and Highways 25 and 74.
