SCOTT CITY, Mo. - Traffic is moving smoothly now after a multi-car crash on Interstate 55 near Scott City.Monday night traffic was at a standstill after a multi-car wreck shut down the interstate for about three hours.
The crash happened around 10:30.
According to people on the scene, the driver of a northbound tractor trailer hit a patch of ice and lost control of his rig. It started weaving all over the interstate before finally overturning.
Scott City police responded to the scene and I-55 was so slick the officer lost control of his patrol car and slid down an embankment. The officer then hit a Missouri Department of Transportation vehicle which had also ran off the interstate and overturned.
At least five other cars in both the north and southbound lanes wrecked in the same area at the same time.
The interstate was shutdown in both directions backing up traffic for miles. Police say it's just an example of how quickly roads can be fine and then in just a matter of minutes become dangerous.
Southbound lanes of I-55 were finally reopened around midnight.
On the northbound side, one lane was opened shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Scott City police tell us to use caution driving through the area this morning as bridges are still icy and they are still working to clean-up the mess left by this wreck.
Luckily, there were no serious injuries, but four people were taken to the hospital with some bumps and bruises.
