Honor Student to Attend Presidential Inauguration
By: Mike Shain

SIKESTON, Mo. - Rebecca Patterson is one of those high school students who makes her parents and school proud.  And for good reason, the National Honor Society member and musician with the Sikeston High School Marching Band takes time to help others.

Rebecca is president of the Leo Club which performs community service.  That work includes keeping a park clean and assisting the sponsoring Lions Club with an annual Chili Day. She's worked with United Way since she was six or seven and helps out at the Senior Center.

"To me, it's all about feeling good on the inside," Rebecca said as she prepares for a trip to a five day conference in Washington.

She will attend the inauguration of Barack Obama as 44th President of the United States on January 20, 2009.  Besides watching the swearing in, she'll also attend on the black-tie inaugural balls with headline entertainment from American Idol singer Chris Daughtry.

The conference, made up of young leaders from across the nation will hear from former general and Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Vice President Al Gore.

The daughter of Jerry and Gina Patterson of Sikeston plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

"I want to stay close to home," she said.  Rebecca will major in psychology at Southeast.

As for watching the swearing in of President Obama, "Crazy," she says.  "It's going to be memorable.  One thing I can tell my grandkids about one day."
