MT. VERNON, Ill. - The downturn in the economy has several people in the Heartland feeling a little less thankful this year just one day before Thanksgiving.

he Mt. Vernon Continental Tire plant will cut more than 100 jobs.

More than 120 workers at the General Tire manufacturing plant in Mount Vernon have lost their jobs. Hank Eisenga the vice president of manufacturing tells Heartland News that the exact number of workers layed off is 124 temporary workers.  These people were hired on to handle specific projects General Tire had going on at the time they were hired.

Eisenga says the downturn in the auto and trucking industries forced General Tire to reorganize their workforce at the Mt. Vernon facility.

No word yet on if these temporary workers will be rehired at a later date.  Eisenga says that General Tire is taking things day by day at this time. Look for much more on these lay offs at general tire tonight on Heartland News and kfvs12.com.
