Rescued Horses Need Home

BOLLINGER COUNTY, Mo. - Sixteen horses, most of them were underfed and not cared for.  Luckily, the horses were rescued a few weeks ago and are on the road to recovery.  The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri is looking for good, permanent homes for the animals, and they're also asking for donations to help care for the horses in the meantime.

Charlotte Craig and Vicci Eaton helped rescue the animals.  Craig says a Heartland woman gave away the animals to another local woman, who thought she was helping out.

"She was driving down the road with a trailer full of eight critically ill and compromised horses and she realized she had no place to go," said Craig.

That's where Vicci Eaton came in.  She took in six of the horses to care, feed, and rehab herself.

"It's hard not to help when you have a passion in your soul for a horse like I do," explained Eaton.

The horses will survive, but face a lengthy recovery.

"Our main concern was to start a feeding program, vitamin supplements, plenty of water, all they hay they can eat and medical attention," said Eaton. "When you have a horse with overgrown hooves, if you clip too short too soon, you can injure their tendons and legs."

The animals can be adopted soon, but under special circumstances.

"We'll be picky.  You have to demonstrate you can take care of them, and you have to give them a permanent home.  They've already lived through hell and paid their dues," Craig said.
