Show-Me Scholars
By: Jason Lindsey
If you've got a child in high school, Missouri's got a plan for better success after graduation. The Show-Me Scholars Initiative, implemented by the Missouri Chamber Education Foundation, is designed to motivate students to complete a more rigorous set of high school courses.
"Being a Show-Me Scholar will better prepare students to take on math, technology, and engineering degrees without adding on another year because of remedial classes," said Tim Arbeiter with the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce
The program brings local business leaders into the classroom, where they work with educators to motivate students into becoming Show-Me Scholars.
Four schools used the Show-Me Scholars curriculum last year and Arbeiter said the program should start in the Cape Girardeau School District soon. "We are very fortunate that here in Cape Girardeau the school district curriculum matches almost identical."
Even better news, a Show-Me Scholar would have a better chance at getting a local job. "We would look at providing opportunity for those Show Me Scholars to get awareness if you will work at the hospital or manufacturing firms," said Arbeiter.
