White Sox slip past Red Sox 2-1 on error in 9th
CHICAGO (AP) - Alexei Ramirez scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a throwing error and the Chicago White Sox edged the Boston Red Sox 2-1 on a frigid Tuesday night.
Tied at one, Red Sox reliever Burke Badenhop allowed a one-out single to Ramirez. After Tyler Flowers struck out, Chris Capuano replaced Badenhop.
Capuano walked Adam Eaton to move Ramirez to second. Then with a 3-2 count, Marcus Semien hit a grounder to Xander Bogaerts at shortstop, who one-hopped his throw to first baseman Mike Carp. Carp wasn't able to scoop the throw and Ramirez, who was already running on the pitch never stopped when rounding third and scored without a throw.
White Sox reliever Daniel Webb got one out in the ninth for the victory.
Cards pitching shuts down Brewers again 6-1
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Shelby Miller struck out seven and allowed three hits over six innings, and Mark Ellis had two RBIs in his return from the disabled list to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-1 win Tuesday night over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta each hit solo shots in the ninth off reliever Jim Henderson for the Cardinals, who handed Milwaukee its second straight loss following a nine-game winning streak.
Miller routinely fired fastballs clocked into the mid-90s past hitters before turning the game over to the bullpen in the seventh.
Only Aramis Ramirez managed to break through off Miller hitting a solo homer in the fourth. The Brewers have just one run and six hits over the first two games of the three-game set with their NL Central rival.
Marco Estrada took the loss after allowing three runs over six innings.

A light rain was falling in late morning Tuesday, and rain was in the forecast throughout the day.
White Sox OF Avisail Garcia has shoulder surgery
CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia has had season-ending left shoulder surgery.
The White Sox said doctors at Rush Oak Park Hospital on Tuesday repaired a torn labrum and avulsion fracture in Garcia's left shoulder.
The 22-year-old Garcia was injured when he attempted a diving catch on April 9 at Colorado. Garcia is expected to be ready for the start of spring training next season, without any restrictions.
Garcia was batting .267 with two home runs, four RBIs and six runs in eight games this season. He had his first career multihomer game the day before getting hurt.
Cardinals activate 2B Mark Ellis from DL
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals have activated Mark Ellis from the 15-day disabled list and inserted him into the starting lineup at second base for Tuesday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Ellis missed the first 13 games of the season with left knee tendinitis. He went 1 for 3 while playing five innings during a rehab game Sunday at Triple-A Memphis.
Ellis signed a one-year deal with St. Louis in the offseason. The 11-year veteran is a .407 career hitter against Milwaukee.
Shortstop Pete Kozma was optioned to Triple-A on Monday night to make room for Ellis on the 25-man roster.
Western Illinois hires Wright as basketball coach
MACOMB, Ill. (AP) - Western Illinois has named Billy Wright as its new men's basketball coach.
The school said Wright was introduced at a news conference on campus Tuesday.
He takes over for Jim Molinari who resigned last week.
Wright was Molinari's associate head coach before moving to Ball State as an assistant last season.

Molinari took Western Illinois to its only two post-season appearances as a Division I team. The Leathernecks went to the CBI tournament in 2012 and 2013.
Oshie, Morrow practice for Blues
ST. LOUIS (AP) - T.J. Oshie and Brenden Morrow participated in the St. Louis Blues' optional skate, a positive step for a franchise hit hard by injuries during a late slide in the regular season.
Three other regulars weren't ready on Tuesday - captain David Backes and forwards Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Sobotka.
Coach Ken Hitchcock says the true test for any of them will come in a full-go practice on Wednesday, a day ahead of their playoff opener against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. But he says what he's seen so far keeps him confident they'll be at full strength at some point during the series.
The Blackhawks got their two biggest stars, forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, back on the ice Monday.

Ricketts: Cubs not interested in move to suburbs
NEW YORK (AP) - Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts thinks a move to the suburbs might be lucrative but says his team remains committed to refurbishing century-old Wrigley Field.
The Cubs won approval from Chicago's City Council last July for a $500 million renovation that would include installation of a 5,700-square-foot video scoreboard at Wrigley, which turns 100 on April 23. The team also wants to erect a 650-square-foot sign in right field with a guarantee neighboring rooftop owners won't slow construction with a lawsuit.
A member of the audience Tuesday at the MLB Diversity Business Summit asked a panel that included Ricketts about the Atlanta Braves' planned move in 2017 from downtown to a suburban Cobb County and how the team could maintain a connection with the community near Turner Field.
Ricketts said the Cubs have been trying to avoid such an issue.
