CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Alpha Natural Resources expects to lay off 1,100 workers at 11 West Virginia surface coal mines by mid-October. The company notified employees this afternoon that it expects to idle mines and related facilities, citing dismal markets and federal regulation.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The Obama administration's push to reduce black lung disease by limiting coal dust in mines becomes effective tomorrow. New requirements include increased dust sampling in mines and citations when coal operators don't take immediate action for high levels.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Federal data shows a wealthy West Virginia coal executive is facing 250 pending violations at mine operations in five states including West Virginia. The executive, billionaire Jim Justice, has acknowledged that the violations are significant but he says all the issues will be corrected.

BYRDSTOWN, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities in Tennessee are investigating two bodies found in Pickett County as a possible double homicide. State investigative agents are collecting evidence and trying to figure out a timeline for the crime. The victims have not been positively identified. Pickett County is located on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line surrounded by Clay, Overton and Fentress Counties.
