PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Two McCracken County School workers were jailed Tuesday afternoon after being indicted for theft by a McCracken County Grand Jury.

Thomas Clement, 51, of McCracken County, and Christopher Stamper, 43, of Marshall County, both turned themselves in at the McCracken County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

The charges come from an investigation which began on Dec. 22.

Kentucky State Police were contacted by a representative of the McCracken County School District of possible misuse of school transportation funds by district employees.

Detectives were told that several items including utility trailers and other automotive equipment was being stored in a field in Marshall County.  The items were located and taken as evidence.

Two employees of the McCracken County Schools bus garage worked together to purchase thousands of dollars worth of automotive items and other tools with school transportation funds, according to Kentucky State Police.  Many of the items were purchased for personal use.

The investigation showed that many of the invoices for the items had been altered to show that the items were legitimate district related purchases.  The charges exceeded $10,000.

On Friday, Feb. 18, a Kentucky State Police detective presented the investigation to a McCracken County Grand Jury.  The Grand Jury returned indictments for theft by unlawful taking over $10,000, and receiving stolen property over $10,000.

On Tuesday, Stamper and Clement were each charged with both offenses and taken to the McCracken County Jail.

Bond for both men was set at $2,500.  The Kentucky State Police continue to investigate.
