CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Breast cancer survivors face struggles even after the disease is in remission.

Those who've had mastectomies are left with a physical and psychological reminder of their battle.

That's why many decide to have reconstructive surgery to feel better about their bodies and help in the healing process.

There are a lot of options out there.  One procedure actually uses a woman's own body.

The TRAM flap procedure takes tissue and fat from a woman's stomach to create a new breast.

Dr. J. Stewart Humphrey with Heartland Plastic Surgery says for some women this can be a good option.

"This particular procedure is often good for women who want to use their own tissue rather than have implants and the long term issues that can go along with implant reconstruction," said Dr. Humphrey. "For carefully chosen patients it can actually give a result that mimics the natural breast better than an implant reconstruction."

Dr. Humphrey says the most important thing: talk to a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery about what is best for you.

It's also important to note insurance coverage for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is mandated by the 1998 Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act.
