CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A spray painting vandal is on the loose on the SIU campus.  Now police are asking everyone on campus to help them put a stop to the vandalism.

The first graffiti images starting show up on the Carbondale campus shortly after the school year began.

"Since August we've had 25 incidents of graffiti across campus," said SIU Crime Prevention Unit Coordinator Officer Russell Thomas.  "It's been nothing racists, nothing sexual and really nothing derogatory. It's just that they are utilizing the buildings and state facilities to express their views."

For some students at the university it's a view they really don't want to see.

"I think it's terrible that someone would destroy our campus," said Jenna Buchholz.  "They may think it's funny. But I don't think it's right at all."

The clean up of the damage left behind by the vandals is beginning to add up for the cash strapped college.

"With the budget where it is, it's costly to clean these up, with the labor involved and the paint to repaint some of the surfaces," said Officer Thomas.

But, the cost may end up being even more then dollars for the campus community.

"I think it's really childish because we pay so much in tuition to go here," said David Parkman.  "And it makes our school look really bad. And I think they really shouldn't be doing it."

"I don't think it's good. I mean this is where we go to school," said Jordan Faison.  "If it's a student they need to stop it and respect our buildings."

If police can catch the graffiti vandal it could cost the suspect some time in jail.

"With the amount of damage and cost to repair it, it is damage to state supported property so it would be a felony," said Officer Thomas.

If you have any information about this crime on the SIU campus your asked to call Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS(2677).
