CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) - A local lawmaker is sounding off on a proposed bill that would require state officials to take drug tests.
The Missouri house is considering legislation that would require lawmakers, judges and other elected officials to take drug tests.
The tests would be required for all officials before assuming office and every two years after that.
Today we spoke with Representative Jo Ann Emerson, who thinks it's a good idea.
"I have no problem as a public official being forced to submit to a drug test at all. If, as a public official, you're going to make the law, then you have to be willing to submit yourself to that law as well," Emerson said.
She made the comments Friday during a stop in Caruthersville.
If an official refuses a drug test, it would be considered an admission of using a controlled substance without permission.
The proposed bill has made it through the house but right now there's no word on how the state senate will vote on the issue.
