MARION, IL (KFVS) - According to doctors, it is the number one killer of women in southern Illinois. However, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease.
Thursday evening many women dressed in red, gathered at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center to take part in the Go Red for Women campaign.
Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association's national movement to raise awareness of women's risk for heart disease.
Carol Stricklin know firsthand the reality of the disease. Just more than a year ago, she had a heart valve replacement. Stricklin says she often told her doctor he was looking for symptoms that she did not have.
"He kept telling me 'Oh the tests don't lie.' I didn't have any of the symptoms you should have. Women don't have the same symptoms as men," Stricklin said.
"In the Midwest region, including southern Illinois, there seems to be a higher instance of heart disease often attributed to diet and exercise patterns," said Heartland Regional Medical Center Cardiothoracic Surgeon Paula Guinnip.
Guinnip says heart disease is preventable through a healthy lifestyle. That includes regular exercise, nutritious foods, and the end of smoking.
