CAPE GIRARDEA (KFVS) -  A first of its kind study in Missouri shows more people then ever need help putting food on the table.  It's the first time all of the states' food networks have come together to get a complete look at the needs in Missouri.

Southeast Missouri Food Bank director Karen Green says the study shows the need is huge.

"In 2008 we distributed 2.8 million pounds of food," said Green. "Last year we had an 86 percent increase of more than 5 million pounds of food."

The SEMO Food Bank on Nash Road in Cape Girardeau supplies pantries in 16 southeast Missouri counties.  The study shows, in this area alone, 40,000 people use those food services every month.  The study also suggests a tough economy in to blame for the need.

To address these needs, the food bank is stepping up it's efforts with the Mobile Food Pantry.

Distributions will be held in all Southeast Missouri counties in the weeks ahead.  Eleven are planned:

  • Monday, February 1 - Lighthouse Christian Center, Dexter, 10am
  • Tuesday, February 2 - marble Hill Pantry, Marble Hill, 8:30am
  • Wednesday, February 3 - Victory Outreach Church, Cape Girardeau, 5pm
  • Thursday, February 4 - Friendship Church, Howardville, 7am
  • Friday, February 5 - Sikeston Food Pantry, Sikeston, 11:30am
  • Saturday, February 6 - United Voice of Zion, Malden, 9am
  • Thursday, February 11 - United Gospel Mission, Poplar Bluff, 8:30am
  • Friday, February 12 - Faith Family Worship, Fredericktown, 10am
  • Thursday, February 18 - Reynolds County Pantry, Ellington, 9am
  • Mississippi County - TBA
