Carbondale church vandals break window, cause gas leak

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Church leaders at the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale say vandals caused quite a raucous Wednesday.

Someone apparently threw a large stepping stone through a stained glass window either late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

But the damage to the church didn't end with a broken window. The stone was so big, when it crashed down; it cracked a natural gas regulator causing a sizeable gas leak inside the church. It prompted the evacuation of the church preschool, and the closure of the church.

"I think they saw something they could throw through the window and for whatever reason did that. The fact that it hit the gas line I think was unintentional," said First Presbyterian Church Pastor Janice West.

The pastor says this is the third incident of vandalism targeting the church's stained glass windows in recent years.
