JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (KFVS) -- Friday morning many people got their first real blast of cold weather and frost.

State health officials say now is the time to check your furnace to make sure it's working properly to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Some things about the gas that you might not know:

- The gas is odorless and invisible but can kill.

- Last year, 49 people in the U.S. died from exposure to Carbon Monoxide and another 287 had to go to the hospital after getting sick.

- The gas can be released into your home when gas, natural gas, wood and other items are burned.

The biggest symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure are sleepiness and nausea.  One way to protect yourself is to get a carbon monoxide detector.

They work like smoke detectors and will alert you if the gas is building up inside your home.

Another way to avoid problems is to have your furnace checked once a year.
